karl meier, ken meier and jon krohn, aka stave, are launching a label called standards & practices.
the three us artists, who share chicago roots, have a pretty straightforward mission in mind for standards & practices: “to provide a platform for releases by both talker and stave, as well as for material by other like-minded artists and collaborators.” talker is the downwards-affiliated duo of karl meier—a longtime techno dj, now based in berlin, who took part in ra’s playing favourites series last year—and krohn, formerly of the experimental rock group male, who’s also been putting out his own brand of abstract, industrialized electronic music as stave for around four years. ken meier, a new york-based graphic designer, partner at common name and dj—and karl’s brother—takes care of art and design for the label.
standards & practices’ opening move is a talker 12-inch, battle standards, the duo’s third full release and first since their 2014 album for downwards. a three-track ep built with material from their new live set and “aimed squarely at the dance floor,” it includes a new version of “my favorite colour is gold,” from 2015’s the immortal eye compilation cd. it’s due out in late july. next will be black hills, a five-track ep from stave that’s expected in september.

die legendären uk-elektro-pioniere & ninja tune-gründer coldcut sind mit einer grandiosen 5-track ep inklusive features von roots manuva & roses gabor auf ihrem label ahead of our time zurück! coldcut veröffentlichen einen neuen cocktail aus wörtern, musik und bildern, die black als -dissentertainment- beschreibt. die neue veröffentlichung ist außerdem auch die rückkehr von ahead of our time, dem label, das matt und jon als zuhause ihrer ersten veröffentlichungen wählten. coldcut wären nicht coldcut, wenn ihre musik nicht immer mit visuals und politik verknüpft wäre. das duo arbeitete für das artwork mit rca studenten und dem absolventen kim rugg zusammen, um kulturaktivismus in einem laufenden system aufzuzeigen. co-produziert von switch, enthält diese ep auch gastauftritte von ninja tunes roots manuva und roses gabor. fordernd, forschend und immer noch verspielt - nun mehr denn je: coldcut sind zurück!

auf ulrich schnauss 5tem studio-album “no further ahead than today” regieren einmal mehr die elektronisch eingespielten ambient-pop-hymnen, die längst zu seinem markenzeichen geworden sind. diese sollten fans von künstlern wie jon hopkins und brian eno interessieren. schnauss selbst ist umtriebig - seit 2014 ist er keyboarder bei tangerine dream, produziert unter eigenem namen remixes für pop-künstler wie depeche mode, pet shop boys, todd terje und bryan ferry und hat gerade für die decca-compilation “re:works” bachs “prelude in c” neu in szene gesetzt.
“no further ahead than today” ist klar mehr pop als ambient. starke melodien stehen im vordergrund, die stücke sind mit rhythmen unterlegt, zuweilen gar mit gesang begleitet, eine hymnische note ist immer präsent. spätestens seit seinen beiden solo-alben, die bei dem deutschen label city center offices erschienen, gilt schnauss als ein elektroniker, der manche tugenden des britischen indie-shoegaze-sounds auf seine klangvorstellungen überträgt.
